Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 8 3/8" x 5 3/4", pages unnumbered - by my counting 34; all bar the two pages of explanation and introduction being reproductions of Mackley's holograph letters and drawings. Cover also serves as title-page and includes engraving of a star, which Mackley sen…t as a proof to Deborah ( the child of the title) with one of his letters. A printed folded insert indicates that this copy was used as a Christmas and New Year card by Leonard and Gladys Gray in 1989, also recording the fact of their 50th wedding anniversary. Stapled sheets, originally held - and just holding - by three very light glue points to a dark grey folded card cover / jacket with the printing on the cover in dark gray. An 'as new' copy. Uncommon.

A tiny book of exquisite b/w wood engravings including rural scenes possibly of the Great Ouse at Hemingford Grey, Huntingdonshire (now sadly enveloped by Cambridgeshire.) George Edward Mackley MBE (born 1900 in Huntingdon, died… 1983 in Tonbridge, Kent) was an English wood engraving artist: "My wife was born at Hemingford Grey in Huntingdonshire and we knew and loved its river, the Great Ouse. We sat by it, we meditated by it.I knew its locks, its churches, its meadows, and, further afield, its fens. It became part of my life." Very good indeed.

Printed for Pat and Michael Jaffé at Christmas 1989, their last Christmas in Cambridge before his retirement as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum: facsimile reproductions of a charming correspondence, 1974-9, between the wood-engraver and…the Jaffés' daughter Deborah, illustrated with his drawings and beginning when she was seven years old. "Here is a drawing of . . . a very lazy horse. If the men kept him waiting long he used to go to sleep on his feet, with his head drooping low. If I tried to sleep standing up, I should fall down with a mighty crash which would send frightened rabbits scampering into their burrows. Startled rooks would caw loudly and fly off to the next village. White-faced ladies would peep between their window curtains to see what was going on . . .".

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The First UK printings published by The Gresham Press (Gresham Books Ltd), Old Woking in 1981. 2 Vols., small Folios; finely hand-bound by E. A. Weeks & Son in quarter blind-stamped calf over marbled paper-covered boards; spines lettered and lined in gilt; numerous reproduced engravi…ngs throughout both texts, as well as an additional suite of 62 loose plates housed in a flap-case to the rear of 'Confessions' as issued ; The BOOKS very near Fine copies both, with light scattered foxing to the calf, mostly affecting 'George Mackley'. The books are protected in removable Mylar covers. A wonderful set of two important books by George Mackley. 'Confessions' limited to just 250 hand numbered copies, this no. '89', signed by Mackley to the limitation page. The book was produced as part of a memento of the exhibition of his wood engravings at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in November 1981. Also included here is a rather modest four page H/W letter from Mackley to fellow artist Ann Le Bas, thanking her for her kind words regarding his MBE. Mackley recalls a trip taken to Winsford, when he was caught in a rainstorm with his wife and her family and took refuge in a nearby pub. He goes on "what fine support you and Monica [Poole] have given to the painter-etchers. You have spent many hours working when help was needed." Dated in 1983, the artist continues "As I fear is only too apparent, writing has become difficult for me. As fatigue sets in, calligraphy, spelling and sensible expression falter. my first stroke completely destroyed my engraving skills, such as they were". He concludes "I hope that you are pursuing your pleasure in the practice of your favourite media and that you are meeting with success of every kind. I see that my strength is failing, so I will thank you for your sending one of the kindest messages which I have received from anybody and ask you to accept my very best wishes. May all go well with you." Mackley passed away just a few months after this letter was written, and a newspaper clipping containing an obituary is also loosely included with this set. The recipient, (Rachel) Ann Le Bas was born in 1923, and studied at the City & Guilds of London Art School under A. R. Middleton Todd, Rodney Burn and Henry Wilkinson. Living and working in Exmoor for the majority of her life, she was elected member of the Royal Society for Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1960, the Art Workers Guild in 1969, and the New English Art Club in 1972. Her artworks drew heavily on her surroundings, from cityscapes to countryside scenes of her beloved West Country, as well as still life and interiors. A profusely illustrated compendium of the works of George Mackley (1900-1983), a much-loved British artist who was trained as a teacher of art at the Goldsmiths' College in London before discovering the art of wood engraving through Noel Rooke, one of the founders of the Society of Wood Engravers). A fabulous association set. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Mackley, George et al. (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by The National Magazine Company, London in 1948. 8vo., black cloth, title lettered in yellow to upper cover and backstrip; together in the very elusive unclipped pictorial wrapper (15/- to front flap); upper edge yell…ow top-stain faded ; with frontis engraving, and numerous other illustrations in black and white throughout text, including several diagrams and engravings by the artist; The BOOK a very good example with some very light mottling to boards; a little rubbed at spine tips; light spotting mostly affecting endpapers, prelims and upper edge; The scarce WRAPPER is in Very Good++ condition , a little rubbed along spine and folds, with two small holes to the lower panel and some losses to the head and foot, up to 1cm in depth, not affecting lettering. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. This copy inscribed by George Mackley to the front end-paper : "Your acquisition of this book is appreciated as a mark of your great interest in the woodengraver's craft, George Mackley". Together with five blank notecards featuring wood engravings, the two in colour 'hand printed from the box-wood block engraved by George Mackley' and initialed by him in pencil; and a folded handwritten letter, written in black ink by Mackley to Laurence Lee, the stained glass artist, together with the original hand-addressed, stamped envelope. Dated Christmas 1980, Mackley remembers Iain McNab (the noted wood engraver, who passed away in 1967), and apologises for not being able to send him a card "as you may know, the Society for the Maintenance of Aesthetic Standards struck me off their roll years ago and in consequence, wood blocks rest safely in their beds with no pressure from me". "If gravers cannot make marks on wood, a pen can still make marks on paper", he writes, "The marks here made are to the effect that I wish you a very happy Christmas." "The engraving practice in which I was engaged ended long ago", he concludes, "It is, however, very kind of you to take such a keen interest in the exhumation". A lovely first edition of this important book on the subject and craft of wood engraving, with chapters ranging from design, to preparation of the block, engraving tools and printing, and final sections concerning the works of Thomas Bewick and some other modern wood engravings. Copiously illustrated throughout, the book ends with eighteen pages of plates depicting the works of Agnes Miller Parker, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Gertrude Hermes and many others. George Mackley (1900-1983) was trained as a teacher of art at the Goldsmiths' College in London before discovering the art of wood engraving through Noel Rooke, one of the founders of the Society of Wood Engravers. This publication is still considered today to be one of the most important manuals concerning wood engraving techniques. The scarce first issue, with wonderful association material.
