Penson… gehörte in den 1920/30er Jahren zu den Wegbereitern einer modernen fotografischen Bildsprache in der Sowjetunion. Er war 1915 nach Mittelasien gezogen und wurde in den folgenden Jahrzehnten zum wichtigsten Chronisten der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Veränderungen in Usbekistan, seine Aufnahmen erschienen in einer Vielzahl von Zeitschriften.
