Add to basketOriginal Wraps. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Paperback Edition. A first printing of the first UK paperback edition published on 22nd Mar 1962 - Penguin Catalogue No. 1698 - priced at 3/6 on the front cover - with a classic 1960s-style pictorial cover with evocative photograph by street photographer Roger May…ne. Originally published as a hardback in the UK in 1936 by Victor Gollancz, and re-issued in 1954 by Secker & Warburg. ***A very good copy in illustrated orange-red card covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are very clean - just some light marks on the back cover. The spine is really clean with only very light reading creases. There is no lean to the binding but the spine is slightly curved from reading. No fading to the covers. Internally the book is also very good, with the original owner's initials at the top corner of the half-title page. No serious creases or tears, but please note that there is some stain marking at the top margin of p.14, but only slightly affecting the text (please see scans). There is also a small closed tear to the fore-edge of p. 155/6. The paper stock is slightly tanned with age as usual. No foxing. No dustwrappers were issued on these later Penguin editions. ***264 pages plus a six page publisher's catalogue at the back of the book, extending onto the inside back cover. 182mm x 111mm. ***'"Keep the Aspidistra Flying", first published in 1936, is a socially critical novel by George Orwell set in 1930s London. The main theme is Gordon Comstock's romantic ambition to defy worship of the money-god and status, and the dismal life that results. Orwell wrote in a letter to George Woodcock dated 28 September 1946 that "Keep the Aspidistra Flying" was one of the two or three of his books that he was ashamed of because it "was written simply as an exercise and I oughtn't to have published it, but I was desperate for money. At that time I simply hadn't a book in me, but I was half starved and had to turn out something to bring in £100 or so." Orwell did not want either this book or "A Clergyman's Daughter" reprinted during his lifetime. Orwell's biographer Jeffrey Meyers finds the novel flawed by weaknesses in plot, style and characterisation, but praises "a poignant and moving quality that comes from Orwell's perceptive portrayal of the alienation and loneliness of poverty, and from Rosemary's tender response to Gordon's mean misery."' (Wiki) ***First printing of the first paperback edition of George Orwell's classic pre-war work: "Keep the Aspidistra Flying", in very good original condition - despite the aforementioned flaws. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Roger Mayne (Cover photograph) (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: New. Second Edition. The Companion Media Pack is available in the .Introduction to Windows® and Graphics Programming with Visual C++® (2nd Edition) provides an accessible approach to the study of Windows programming. It is intended to be an introduction to Visual C++ for technical people including practicin…g engineers, engineering students, and others interested in Windows programming and its convenient graphics capabilities. While the book is aimed at a technical audience, its mathematical content is modest and should be readable by most people with an interest in C++ programming. Readers are introduced to Windows programming in a natural way; making use of the object-oriented environment, the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), and the document/view organization. Visual C++ is part of Microsoft's Visual Studio and provides full support of program development at all stages - from design to debugging. This second edition brings the original book up to date reflecting the evolution of Visual C++ and the Windows environment since the first edition. All example projects, figures and text in the book have been revised and coverage of touch screen developments has been added. Two new chapters on touch screen programming are based on programming strategies developed throughout the book. New examples demonstrate touch screen operations and consider programming for a tablet environment. More than seventy example projects are provided in the book's Companion Media Pack. The structure and coding for each example project are described thoroughly in a step-by-step fashion. Exercises at the end of each chapter provide opportunities to revisit and extend the tutorial examples. The media pack files include complete program code for all projects as well as files with classes and functions for handling geometric objects and graphs. The graphics examples require only standard Microsoft resources and may be easily adapted for a wide variety of application programs. The Companion Media Pack can be readily updated as Visual C++ continues to evolve. For example, the first update of the media pack was made after the release of a new version of Visual C++. It provides a full set of example projects developed with the new version as an addition to the book's original examples. Continuing updates of the media pack are planned as appropriate.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. SIGNED, DATED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, IN BLACK PEN, ON TITLE PAGE 'Best wishes and thanks Bernard MacLaverty - 4 July 2001'. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corn…ers slightly bruised, some faint grubby smears to page fore edges, not price clipped (£15.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 355pp. The story of the growing up of Martin Brennan, a troubled boy in troubled times, a boy who knows all the questions but none of the answers. This is Belfast in the late sixties. Before he can become an adult, Martin must unravel the sacred and contradictory mysteries of religion, science and sex, he must learn the value of friendship; but most of all he must pass his exams at any cost. A book that celebrates the desire to speak and the need to say nothing 'The Anatomy School' moves from the enforced silence of Martin's Catholic school retreat, through the hilarious tea and biscuits repartee of his eccentric elders to the awkward wit and loose profanity of his two friends, the charismatic Kavanagh and the subversive Blaise Foley. An absorbing, tense and often very funny novel which takes Martin from the initiations of youth to the devoutly wished consummation of the flesh, Bernard MacLaverty's new book is a remarkable recreation of the high anxieties and deep joys of learning to find a place in the world. Quite scarce signed. Jacket photo by Roger Mayne (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).
