paperback. Condition: Acceptable. Please see the condition note after this for details, if this is missing please consider Acceptable to mean poor quality that could include major staining, water damage, writing, missing dustjacket, etc etc. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN s…o please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. Penguin Books D-80. First printing of the true first edition - published as a paperback original. Cover photograph by Roger Mayne. ***Very good in illustrated card covers. The covers have some light wear commensurate with age and handling, but are general…ly clean. The edges of the covers are just slightly rubbed and creased, and there is some light rubbing to the edges of the spine - with a slight curve to the spine from reading, and a light vertical reading crease. No tears or bumps. Internally also very good, with neat ownership details in ink to the inside front cover and half-title page, the latter in calligraphic style. No other annotations. No creases or tears. Some light foxing to the first and last couple of pages, otherwise pages clean - paper stock just lightly tanned. No creases or tears. ***121 pages including notes to the poems of George MacBeth to the rear. 180mm x 110mm. ***'This series is an attempt to introduce contemporary poetry to the general reader by publishing some twenty poems by each of three modern poets in a single volume. In each case the selection will be made to illustrated the poet's characteristics in style and form. Penguin Modern Poets 1,2,3,4, and 5 have already appeared and further volumes are in preparation.' (Quote taken from the back cover). The series eventually ran to 27 volumes, published between 1962 and 1979. ***First printing of the true first edition, in its original card covers - a good reading copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Cover photo by Roger Mayne (illustrator).

Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Paperback Edition. A first printing of the first UK paperback edition published on 22nd Mar 1962 - Penguin Catalogue No. 1698 - priced at 3/6 on the front cover - with a classic 1960s-style pictorial cover with evocative photograph by street photographer Roger May…ne. Originally published as a hardback in the UK in 1936 by Victor Gollancz, and re-issued in 1954 by Secker & Warburg. ***A very good copy in illustrated orange-red card covers. The covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling, but are very clean - just some light marks on the back cover. The spine is really clean with only very light reading creases. There is no lean to the binding but the spine is slightly curved from reading. No fading to the covers. Internally the book is also very good, with the original owner's initials at the top corner of the half-title page. No serious creases or tears, but please note that there is some stain marking at the top margin of p.14, but only slightly affecting the text (please see scans). There is also a small closed tear to the fore-edge of p. 155/6. The paper stock is slightly tanned with age as usual. No foxing. No dustwrappers were issued on these later Penguin editions. ***264 pages plus a six page publisher's catalogue at the back of the book, extending onto the inside back cover. 182mm x 111mm. ***'"Keep the Aspidistra Flying", first published in 1936, is a socially critical novel by George Orwell set in 1930s London. The main theme is Gordon Comstock's romantic ambition to defy worship of the money-god and status, and the dismal life that results. Orwell wrote in a letter to George Woodcock dated 28 September 1946 that "Keep the Aspidistra Flying" was one of the two or three of his books that he was ashamed of because it "was written simply as an exercise and I oughtn't to have published it, but I was desperate for money. At that time I simply hadn't a book in me, but I was half starved and had to turn out something to bring in £100 or so." Orwell did not want either this book or "A Clergyman's Daughter" reprinted during his lifetime. Orwell's biographer Jeffrey Meyers finds the novel flawed by weaknesses in plot, style and characterisation, but praises "a poignant and moving quality that comes from Orwell's perceptive portrayal of the alienation and loneliness of poverty, and from Rosemary's tender response to Gordon's mean misery."' (Wiki) ***First printing of the first paperback edition of George Orwell's classic pre-war work: "Keep the Aspidistra Flying", in very good original condition - despite the aforementioned flaws. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Roger Mayne (Cover photograph) (illustrator).
