Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. The Blackheath Society has just published the fourth and final volume of Blackheath Village & Environs, the comprehensive series of books on the history of local buildings, written by its late President Neil Rhind. Neil died in February 2024. This volume entitled Blackheath in South West Greenwich was produced and edited by his literary executors John Coulter and Julian Watson who dedicated the work to Neil's wife Liz. It covers four centuries from 1600 to 2000, creating a copious book of more than 300 pages plus 158 illustrations. The hard cover edition costs £25 and will be sold in Blackheath at Waterstones and the Bookshop on the Heath and at future Society events. In their preface the executors say: "This volume brings to a conclusion one of the great individual achievements in local history. It is more reminiscent of the 18th century and such works as Edward Hasted's History of Kent than of the 20th or 21st century, where anything on this scale has only been undertaken by teams of scholars working in collaboration." There was a 37 year gap between volumes 2 and 3 and they add: "The series was fifty-five years in the making. Every year, in his delightful Christmas cards, Neil would promise his friends volume 3 was coming soon." But the intervening years produced a stream of new works by Neil, including The Paragon and South Row, Greenwich Revealed, and books called Walking the Village and Walking the Heath. Volume 4 covers some of the most interesting parts of Blackheath to the west of Greenwich Park. After Neil's death his executors found a partial text in his papers and this covered almost all the roads and houses in this area. But it was very much an early draft, full of queries and gaps left for the later insertion of names and dates. Some areas, such as Crooms Hill Grove, parts of Hyde Vale and Westgrove Lane and the Holy Trinity Schools, were not complete. Neil had also written nothing new about The Point and the gap was filled by reprinting the passages about it from the second edition of The Heath. The executors wrote the missing sections on the basis of Neil's notes and checked all names and dates, correcting where necessary and adding such useful material as it came to light.
