Softcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Berry, James (illustrator). 2020 reprint of the 2016 fourth edition, of a title first published in 1950 as "Maori Place Names and their Meanings". 151, [1] pages. Green card covers. Page dimensions: 210 x 148mm. Maps on inside covers. "The previous edition added macrons to long vowels where required. Macrons make all the difference to a name's meaning and pronunciation. Few official places carry macrons as yet, so flexilibity is needed when relating the names listed here to those encountered on maps or signs. In this edition I undertook to update usage as it has evolved over the past 20 years, resulting in revision to numerous entries. There is now more prominent reference to the Maori names of main centres, with inclusion of some important localities (such as Turangawaewae), regions like Te Upoko-o-Re-Ika), and coastal and marine names (like Te Tai-o-Marokura). Additional cross-referencing and maps inside the cover aim to make the book easier to navigate. Revisions have been made to a number of factual and grammatical issues." - from the Foreword to the 2016 edition.

"In this updated edition of the 'Reed Book of Maori Mythology', esteemed editor Ross Calman comprehensively revises the core stories of gods (atua) and people (tangata) and the many other beings that sit on the continuum between the two. Divided into themes, this elegantly produced volume starts with traditions of the creation of the universe, and the separation of Rangi and Papa, then reviews the pantheon of atua (gods), the overworlds and underworlds. Next are the demigods and supernatural peoples, then legends of earth, ocean and sky, tohunga and makutu, and finally legends of love and endurance. He Atua, He Tangata presents different versions for stories, with sources identified where possible. Calman has modernised the language to give stories a contemporary feel, incorporating updates to the reo, making this timeless work ideal for twenty-first century readers.".

He was a missionary and gifted linguist who mastered several Chinese dialects. He was also a central figure in the first opium war and funded his missionary work by drug-running. He has been described as 'a cross between parson, pirate, charlatan and genius, philanthropist and crook.' He is regarded as the founding father of the Chinese Lutheran church. This title is extremely scarce, particularly in original cloth.
