One mat slightly smaller than the others and on lighter, stiff paper. Paul Citroen was a German-born Dutch artist, educator and founder of the New Art Academy in Amsterdam. He studied under Kandinsky, Klee and Itten. He is best known for his photomontage of Metropolis.

War and the Future, ouvrage de propagande écrit au cur de la première guerre mondiale, réunit diverses observations sur le conflit en cours, soulignant le changement radical de l'art de la guerre qu'imposent les nouvelles technologies d'armement. Wells y expose sa théorie d'un nouvel ordre mondial scientifique et technique, qui imprégnait déjà ses chefs-d'uvre de science-fiction de la fin du siècle dernier (War of the Worlds, The Time Machine). De son côté Citroën, ayant compris l'importance capitale de l'artillerie dans la guerre moderne, fit le pari en 1915 de concurrencer la puissance des usines d'armement Krupp. Abandonnant son projet d'usine automobile le temps de la guerre, il construisit à ses propres frais un immense complexe industriel sur le quai de Javel, qui produisit 23 millions d'obus pour les armées alliées. Iakovlev was a Russian-born artist specialized in subjects he encountered on his numerous travels. He became artistic advisor to two Citroen motoring expeditions, this being the second from 1931 to 1932 from Beirut to China, led by Georges-Marie Haardt (portrayed on the first plate), who died of pneumonia upon completion in Hongkong. Along the route from Lebanon into China Iakovleff sketched different types of people, from Sheikh Sattam of the Haddadin (a Christian Arab tribe) of Palmyra, Kurds of Iraq and Persia, a Chaldean woman from Baghdad, Iranians, Afghans, a Turkic man from Herat, people of the Northwest Frontier, and the Pamir mountain range, where the expedition crossed a pass at over 4800 meters altitude, which set the world altitude record for cars. The expedition then descended into Chinese Turkestan, the Gobi desert and finally to the border region of Vietnam and China, especially Tonkin, with the Russian artist constantly drawing the changing ethnicities and their traditional costumes. Several of the portraits were signed by the sitters which adds immediacy to the drawings.
