This publication has been issued in conjunction with the exhibition "Eugene Cuvelier, Photographer in the circle of Corot," held at the MET, from Oct. 8, 1996 to Jan. 12, 1997. Cuvelier, the French landscape photographer, is closely associated with the Barbizon painters Corot, Rousseau, Millet, Daubigny, and others. His exquisite and lyrical forest studies of Fountainbleau, made in the late 1850's and early 1860's, reveal a photographer of painterly sensibility. 16 pages.

Condition: Gut. gestochenes Porträtfrontispiz, 5 nn Bll., 275 S. gutes Exemplar des seltenen Werkes. Franz de Hieronymo war einer der führenden Volksmissionare seiner Zeit. Wäre es nach seinen eigenen Wünschen gegangen, hätte er als Missionar im Fernen Osten gewirkt, doch wollten es seine Ordensoberen, dass er als Volksmissionar in Neapel wirkte. Die Überlieferung beschreibt seine Verkündigung als überzeugend und begeisternd. Von seinen Predigten sind mehrere tausend Seiten erhalten, durch die man einen sehr genauen Einblick in die homiletische Praxis des späten 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhunderts gewinnen kann. Franz de Hieronymo gründete soziale Hilfswerke für gefährdete Mädchen, junge Frauen, Arbeiter und Sträflinge. Nach seinem Tode wurde er in seinem Geburtsort beigesetzt. Yates Thompson explains in his commentary that while he knows of a number of copies of Cuvelier's work, this is the only illustrated one known to him. A Presentation Copy inscribed and signed on the title-page by Henry Yates Thompson to G.F. Warner (Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum). Bookplate of Charles Travis Clay, sometime Librarian of the House of Lords, on front pastedown endpaper. Boards a little fingermarked, otherwise a Very Good copy.

Original printed wrappers, which are chipped on the spine, with a partial printed label of the distributor affixed on the upper cover and title page. Old dampstain on the majority of pages; a near very good copy. Arthur Chevalier, was the son of Charles Chevalier, head of the famous Parisian optical firm who provided lenses to Niépce, Daguerre, Talbot and others. It was Charles who first designed the Megascope, an optical device, similar to the camera obscura, for projection of opaque photographs. Roosens and Salu No. 6559.
