This volume collects and translates essays written by important German-speaking commentators on Husserl, ranging from his contemporaries to scholars of today, to make available in English some of the best commentary on Husserl and the phenomenological project. The essays focus on three problematics within phenomenology: the nature and method of phenomenology; intentionality, with its attendant issues of temporality and subjectivity; and intersubjectivity and culture. Several essays also deal with Martin Heidegger's phenomenology, although in a manner that reveals not only Heidegger's differences with Husserl but also his reliance on and indebtedness to Husserl's phenomenology. Taken together, the book shows the continuing influence of Husserl's thought, demonstrating how such subsequent developments as existentialism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction were defined in part by how they assimilated and departed from Husserlian insights. The course of what has come to be called continental philosophy cannot be described without reference to this assimilation and departure, and among the many successor approaches phenomenology remains a viable avenue for contemporary thought. In addition, problems addressed by Husserl-most notably, intentionality, consciousness, the emotions, and ethics-are of central concern in contemporary non-phenomenological philosophy, and many contemporary thinkers have turned to Husserl for guidance. Jan Patocka (Turnov, Bohemia 1907-Praga 1977) estudió filosofía en Praga, París, Berlín y Friburgo; alumno de Husserl y Heidegger, ha sido uno de los filósofos europeos más influyentes del siglo XX. Es conocido principalmente por su papel como portavoz de la Carta 77 , el movimiento de resistencia cívica que reclamaba el respeto a los derechos humanos por parte del gobierno comunista de Checoslovaquia. Su muerte, debida a los interrogatorios brutales que sufrió, reviste a su figura de un carácter socrático, guardando plena coherencia con sus opciones filosóficas fundamentales. Para él, la libertad define a la humanidad; una libertad que viene dada por la capacidad de distanciamiento en la existencia humana. Resulta necesario tomar conciencia de que existe un abismo, imposible de colmar, entre aquello a lo que se aspira y aquello que se posee, un abismo que invita a una permanente búsqueda. El filósofo ejemplifica la posibilidad de distanciarse por completo de lo que hay , de las realidades aquí presentes, y de situarse radicalmente en otro plano. Bajo el título Libertad y sacrificio se reúne un conjunto de textos que cubren gran parte de la vida intelectual de Patocka, desde 1934, al principio de su carrera, hasta 1976. Durante ese tiempo asistimos a una incansable investigación, emprendida a despecho de las circunstancias. La naturaleza de los textos viene ligada a su vida: ensayos breves destinados a un público amplio, escritos privados, conferencias o transcripciones de seminarios semiclandestinos. Estos textos inciden en la idea del distanciamiento, y la libertad como fundamental posibilidad humana que no puede dejar de tener consecuencias: Si el filósofo se distancia del mundo, el mundo responde con el odio al filósofo , comenta Patocka. En el fondo, esta posibilidad de la libertad es la única real de cara a la consecución futura de una humanidad digna de sí misma. Jan Patocka es seguramente el filósofo checo más influyente de la modernidad y el principal representante del movimiento fenomenológico en Checoslovaquia. En este texto, se propone analizar los fundamentos de la fenomenología tal y como aparecen formulados por Husserl. Su objetivo es extraer de la fenomenología aquello que aún tiene sentido para nuestra manera de pensar. A través de la aplicación de una crítica contundente a las bases de la fenomenología, lo que quiere no es acabar con la fenomenología, sino más bien empezar. Evidentemente, la fenomenología tal y como aparece en las formulaciones husserlianas no es aceptable sin más ni más cuando ha pasado casi un siglo de discusiones fenomenológicas. Se podría decir que el esfuerzo de Patocka significa una actualización de la fenomenología, o, mejor aún, de una filosofía fenomenológica. A través de su análisis y de su crítica de los pensamientos de Husserl, Patocka llega a un punto en el que no sólo se pregunta por las posibilidades y el sentido de la fenomenología como escuela filosófica, sino de la filosofía misma.
