Two volumes, complete. Octavo, original polished calf, calf labels, [150], 660 pp. + [ii], 245, [ii] pp. Frontis portrait, engraved title, plates, 1 folding. Denis Petau (1583-1652) was a French Jesuit theologian, and one of the best-known scholars of his age, producing works in the fields of chronology, history, philosophy, polemics, patristics, and the history of Christianity. This work is a summary of a larger work he published in 1628, entitled Tabulae chronolgicae. That work was developed alongside of his vast, but unfinished, De theologicis dogmatibus, the first systematic attempt ever made to treat the development of christiana doctrine from an historical point of view. Very Good; joints are tender, upper label of Volume II is chipped, a bit of scuffing, interiors clean and tight. Religion, Theology, History, Leather, Jesuit. yxxsl.

Denis Pétau (1583-1652), Latinized to Dionysius Petavius, earned a Master of Arts in Greek at Paris. In 1605 he joined the Jesuits. For many years he was professor of divinity at the College de Clermont, the chief Jesuit establishment in Paris. At sixty years of age he stopped teaching, but retained his office of librarian and consecrated the rest of his life to this work, popularly known as the "Dogmata theologica". The first three volumes first appeared in 1644; the last two volumes were published in 1650, but even these left the work unfinished. It was incomplete at the death of the author, and, despite several attempts, never continued. - The covers dirty, bit knocked, with old pasted up damages at the spine, bit chipped, pages uncut, few tolerable worm-holes, no mould-stains; else: Vol. I: the first sheets almost loose, Page 85-350 with water-damage (up to 10cm big); Voll. II: Binding bit defect; Vol. III: Some water-damages, but without touching the text; Vol. IV: Whole book with very strong water-damage. Therefore last sheet with little loss of text; Vol. V: back cover with some worm holes; Vol. VI.: Worm hole in the lower margin.
